Holistic ANIMAL THERAPIES

Physically, emotionally and mentally your animal can experience the same issues as you, from a sprained ankle to arthritis and auto-immune diseases to emotional anxiety and grief.

how does reiki work?

It is said that a form of reiki was originally developed hundreds of years ago in Tibet, but was rediscovered by a Japanese monk named Dr Usui in 1922. He found that we can learn to harness the energy that surrounds us all to bring about a balanced mind, body and spirit. By channelling the reiki energy through a practitioner they can transfer it to the patient to rebalance the body’s natural energy centres. This in turn allows the body’s built-in healing abilities to work as they should.

Reiki for dogs can help balance your pup’s energy. This means the Reiki therapist will use their hands to direct a gentle, natural flow of healing energy into your dog’s body in order to bring about deep relaxation and release tension or pain. It usually feels like a warm, soothing sensation to the animal.

While Reiki energy can be used on a sick or injured dog, it can also be used as a preventative to any potential illness or ailment or to maintain the general well-being of a dog. Reiki sessions can also be done at any time of day or night.

Can Dogs/Cats Benefit From Shiatsu?

Shiatsu is very pleasant and relaxing for animals. During treatment I use my thumbs, hands and elbows – with gentle pressure and flowing motions. The goal of the treatment is to harmonize the balance of energy.

Reiki/Shiatsu can create peacefulness in the transition, it’s all about finding peace.

Touch is a way of communicating more deeply from our heart to our animal’s heart, becoming more aware of the love and compassion that exists between us, and of our deeper connection beyond just our physical relationship.

Treatment benefits

Older dogs can suffer from chronic issues that can cause physical discomfort. Arthritis, stomach and digestive issues and general aching from old age can surface as they grow old. Thankfully reiki can help relieve the symptoms and can even help injuries heal quicker. Cortisol, the stress hormone, inhibits cell regrowth and there is good research to show reiki healing changes the hormones for several hours and is cumulative. Of course, we need to follow our vet’s advice, but by including regular reiki treatments we can help to combat these issues safely and naturally.

Reiki is very relaxing, so if a dog has a physical pain it could be tensing the area. What happens during a reiki session is that the dog will fall into a super relaxed state, enabling their own body to begin the natural healing. It works further by balancing the body’s energy fields to support their whole being.

Just like us humans, when dogs get older they can sometimes get confused and slower. Thankfully reiki can help with this too. By providing them with a deep sense of peace it can help their mental focus, much like the effects of meditating. Reiki is kind of like a meditation, and the energetic flow that comes from this attracts animals. Quite often when opening a reiki session you will find your cat or dog will approach you and drop down to enjoy the healing energies. Sometimes there is a loud sigh that comes from dogs when having reiki treatment as they release old stresses. It can be quite powerful for the animal.Reiki is very relaxing, so if a dog has a physical pain it could be tensing the area. Dogs can also become more fearful of things, such as travelling in a car, meeting other dogs, loud noises etc. This can lead to anxiety which I have found to be something reiki can really work well for.
Fear can lead to many things, including not wanting to go outside or to be around other dogs or people. It is an emotional factor that reiki can assist in releasing. Research shows that during reiki treatments the stress hormone called cortisol is reduced. To see a dog have a fear of something released is quite wonderful, knowing that they can now live a fuller, happier life.

Reiki is offered in many hospitals and hospices for both family members and patients. When Reiki is used to help an animal pass, we find similar benefits.
It’s something we all have to go through with our dogs and there is no easy way through it. When it’s time for our canine friend to pass over to the other side we ourselves find it emotionally crippling both during it and for a long time afterwards. Sometimes our animals are ready for the transition but it can be beneficial to use reiki to help ease some of them over. It helps by offering a sense of peace and grounding to their mind and body. This is a time when having a reiki session yourself can help too. I find it is best when the dog’s human joins in the reiki session as it helps both parties and help build the bond between them.

Here are some of the issues that Reiki/Shiatsu can help with:

Animal Chakras

Animals have 8 Major chakras, 21 Minor chakras and 6 Bud chakras. Alongside the seven Major chakras that animals share with humans (Crown, Third Eye, Throat, Heart, Solar Plexus, Sacral and Root), there is another Major chakra which is unique to animals. It is called the Brachial or Key chakra. This chakra was discovered by the world’s foremost, internationally renowned, animal healer, Margrit Coates (click here to visit Margrit’s web site, The Animal Healer).

The Brachial chakra is located on either side of the body, in the area of the shoulders. It is the main energy center in all animals and links directly to all other chakras. It is the centre which relates to animal-human interaction and any healing should always begin at this chakra. Animals which have a strong, healthy link with their human companions usually have a vibrant Brachial chakra, as it is the center where the animal-human bond is formed and carried.

The Bud chakras are found one on each foot (pad, paw, hoof, etc) and one on the skin at the base opening of each ear (see right). They are especially receptive to subtle energy vibrations; for example changes in the weather like a thunderstorm, or even impending, major earth events like an earthquake or hurricane. The Bud chakras located in the feet are often used to source areas of energy in the ground which are beneficial to the animal. When they find these areas they may paw the ground before either laying or rolling on the spot (not to be confused with a dog finding something ‘smelly’ to roll in!). Standing on such an area can also help ground an animal.
